Ask God to show you the money.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

I watched the movie “Eat, Pray, Love” for the first time last year and, there's a joke in the movie where this guy comes and prays to this statue of a saint everyday asking it to let him win the lottery. Finally, one day the statue comes alive and says “would you please buy a lottery ticket?!” That joke resonated so much with me that day because I had been asking God to help me make more money in my business & it felt like Him telling me “Your answer is yes. It’s already been provided. Go out there and make it!”

It brings to mind this segment of scripture where Jesus was encouraging His disciples not to worry about provision and, instead, to focus on seeking the Kingdom first and everything else they need would be provided (Matthew 6:33). This part about the birds in particular speaks to me because I remember actually watching birds hunting for food one day when this scripture came to mind. They were just out there pecking at the ground with the expectation that they’d find a worm or bug with their name on it.

There was no question of whether the food was out there.

They weren’t praying to God asking for the food.

They knew all they had to do was get up that morning, go look and the food they needed for that day would be there. Oh to be a bird!

I know it’s a little more complex for us than it is for birds—after all we have whole jobs, kids & purposes to manage in the midst of a chaotic world. But what the birds teach us is that the provision we need is already out there, just waiting on us to find it. If God made it that easy for the birds, and we’re more valuable than they are, surely He made it simpler for us too! Maybe we’re the ones complicating it.

So, maybe instead of asking God to help you make more money, the better prayer is “God help me find the money You’ve already provided for me. Lead me to it. Show me the money Lord!” Then go out there and look for it, using the tools He’s already given you. The birds have eyes and ears to hunt for their food, you have your gifts & talents among many other resources God has given you. There is nothing stopping you from making the money you desire but you, so get out of your way and start (or keep) hunting!

Look at how the faithful stewards in the parable operated; they didn’t hesitate about what to do with the talents given to them; they just went out and worked them the best they knew how. If you do the same, trust and believe, even if you don’t do it all “right”, God will still consider you faithful too.
